The Female Read: 'A Good Time to Be a Girl' by Helena Morrissey

Updated: Oct 4, 2021

Who is Helena Morrissey

Helena Morrissey’s life story reads as a string of remarkable achievements. A graduate of Cambridge University, she has built up a prestigious career in finance over the last thirty years. Appointed CEO of the Newton investment management company in 2001, she then became Chair of the Investment Association UK industry trade body in 2014, and, in 2015, she was appointed by the Chancellor to the UK’s Financial Services Trade and Investment Board.

In 2010, Helena founded the 30% Club, a cross-business initiative aimed at achieving 30% women on UK corporate boards. She has been named one of Fortune Magazine’s World’s 50 Greatest Leaders and she was appointed CBE in the 2012 New Year’s Honours List. Oh – and she has nine children.

Somehow, in the midst of all her professional and personal responsibilities, Helena has found time to write and publish a book: ‘A Good Time to Be a Girl’.

What’s the book about?

The book is part-memoir, part-guide, aimed at inspiring the women now moving up the ranks in their professional careers. Morrissey has distilled her years of wisdom and experience into a ‘gentle’ manifesto for change, encouraging women to succeed in their own way.

From flexible working, creative management techniques and advocacy for changing the pushing-for-pay-rises culture, Morrissey rejects the premise that women need to change their behaviour to fit a patriarchal mould of the working world. She also details how she herself has worked to create change with the 30% Club, focusing on the business case for gender equality in order to bring men into the argument and advocating for diversity in the workplace as the best way to ensure a fairer and more prosperous society.

Who should read it?

If you want to be inspired to carve out your own career and want a boost of confidence in embracing your differences and following your gut instinct, this is the book for you.

You can purchase Helena's book on Amazon or in all good bookshops.
